2010 Fundraising Letter

Dear Neighbors,

In this letter we would like to tell you about what we accomplished in 2009 and what we are planning for the remainder of 2010. We are also asking you to make your annual contribution to help pay for our website, printing, and other outreach efforts.

In 2009 we continued to represent our neighborhood on several City and CU committees including CU Restorative Justice, the CU/City Oversight Committee, and the University Hill Commercial Area Management Committee.

Our Urban Design Committee continues to push for high quality redevelopment of the Hill Commercial District using timeless design and sound planning principles. In fact, the City Council made Hill redevelopment its highest planning priority for 2010 at its annual retreat, second only to addressing homelessness and affordable housing. Two UHNA members are participating in the city’s Hill Revitalization Committee.

One of our members has initiated a neighborhood traffic committee to address safety concerns and work with traffic engineering staff at the city on solutions. It was the subject of our March 18th membership meeting.

We have also been working very closely with Environmental Enforcement officers on snow-shoveling and other quality of life issues. Though enforcement got off to a slow start this year we have seen much better enforcement AND COMPLIANCE resulting in more walkable sidewalks after snow storms.

UHNA responded to neighbors’ concern when there was an extreme level of noise and vandalism to cars and buildings, including St.Thomas Church. An emergency meeting was called and was attended by many neighbors. The City and CU sent their representatives including Vice Chancellor Bruno and Police Chief Beckner. A neighbor also organized a Walking Patrol. This led to a de-escalation of misbehaviors. Early intervention was effective.

UHNA donated funds to our gracious host, Grace Lutheran Church, to help fund purchase of new, more comfortable chairs for the basement meeting room. We will all appreciate that in the coming years as we continue to meet at Grace Lutheran.

UHNA contributed funds and support to the Hill Flea Market during its first year. Reviews came in that it is a great success, but it has been reduced to two days per year – one in the spring and one in August.

And finally, we completely revamped our website to ensure that the information contained is timely and current. Please visit it at www.hillneighbors.com and let us know if we can add features that would be useful to you.

In 2010 so far we have updated our by-laws to more accurately reflect the changing nature of the way UHNA functions. We held elections and added several new Executive Committee members, Jane Allen-Fenster, Scott Thomas, Scott Gibbons and Monique Cole. We are deeply grateful for the service of outgoing EC members Linda Bailey and Susan Marine. If you are interested in participating in leadership or on committees please contact one of us. To be added to the UHNA e-mail list, please contact Musa Yavuz,  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We are very excited to announce that we will be bringing back the Annual Neighborhood Picnic (in late August so that more of us can participate).

Contribute. Please make a contribution in the enclosed envelope and send it back today. Any amount is accepted and appreciated. Consider that without UHNA activism, our neighborhood would not be considered the leader in Boulder for constructive interaction with City and CU leadership. The quality of life we enjoy would not be as readily available without the UHNA. And of course, it is well known that your property value is supported when an active neighborhood association exists. This is a sampling of how your neighbors value UHNA:

“Balanced leadership improves livability for residents of Boulder's best neighborhood.” David Raduziner

“Before the last several decades I had to put up with incredible insolent irresponsibility; now I'm really proud to be part of a neighborhood that will not.” Ron Mitchell

“I've had the opportunity to know and work with neighbors I would not have known.” Ellie DePuy

“UNHA: Channel for the neighborhood to be heard by City Council !!” Bill Marine

“UHNA assures me that we have a voice with city government.” Linda Bailey

Kind regards,

THE UHNA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Jane Stoyva, Callie Weiant, Lisa Shoemaker, Jane Allen-Fenster, Scott Thomas, Scott Gibbons, and Monique Cole.
